Holiday Loss Prevention - Are your stores ready?

Posted on 11/23/10 9:54 AM

It is here. Another holiday season is just a few days away and retailers are on edge. What is to be expected of this year’s holiday shopper? Will it be a profitable season?

Holiday ShoppersThese may be the thoughts of the operations and merchandising side of the retail business, however from the loss prevention perspective the thoughts pertaining to the season differs slightly. The LP thought process involves being ready and prepared for increased crowds, increased opportunities for theft and a need to best protect their locations, product and people.

So being that we are a few short days from Black Friday, we find it appropriate to ask. Are your retail locations ready for the holidays?

Here are some resources to help answer that question.

Increased Crowds

Unfortunately over the past few years several incidents have occurred, including serious injuries and death, due to poor crowd control at retail establishments. This year, the National Retail Federation published guidelines to help retailers understand the importance of controlling the increased traffic of frenzied holiday shoppers. You can access the guidelines here.

With increased holiday crowds there is always the possibility of increased shoplifting activity. Make certain any anti-shoplifting devices and security equipment is in good working order and used effectively. Excellent customer service is still the number one deterrent to shoplifting and having people on the sales floor assisting customers will most certainly increase sales and decrease shoplifting opportunities. “Shoplifting Prevention from the mouths of thieves” provides some insight directly from shoplifters who spoke to retailers recently about their methods.

Overall Holiday Preparation

Getting your stores ready for the holidays requires taking a look at your entire loss prevention program and making necessary alterations.
